Engines and Transmissions

Choose from the standard commercial-grade 6.4-liter HEMI® V-8 engine or the optional 6.7-liter Cummins® Turbo Diesel engine. The HEMI® features fuel saver technology, which shuts off four cylinders when not needed, to give you better fuel economy. Usually, the truck goes into economy mode while you are cruising down the highway. You don’t even notice that the truck switches to four cylinders. The Dodge RAM 5500 puts out 429 pound-feet of torque and 370 horsepower so you can easily tow up to 26,000 pounds or carry up to 19,500 pounds. The RAM 5500 also features a 10,000-mile engine oil change interval, thus decreasing maintenance costs.

If you prefer diesel, order the RAM 5500 with the optional 6.7-liter Cummins® Turbo Diesel engine. The diesel features the Smart Diesel Exhaust Brake System and with the right configuration, is able to tow up to 30,600 pounds. The diesel version can be equipped to carry up to 38,500 pounds. The diesel engine features a 15,000-mile oil change interval.

With the gas engine, choose the 66RFE six-speed automatic transmission for the best efficiency or the AS66RC six-speed automatic when you need a heavy duty transmission. When you choose the diesel version, choose from the G56 six-speed manual transmission or the AS69RC six-speed automatic transmission.

Features

If you need even more PTO horsepower, go with the split-shaft PTO, which is available when you choose the Cummins® Turbo Diesel engine.

All Dodge RAM trucks feature electronic stability control with trailer sway control, rain brake support, hill start assist and all-speed traction control to help drives maintain control in less-than-good driving conditions.

A standard seven-pin wiring harness is integrated in the bumper to ensure your trailers have a secure connection to the electrical system and control center. The rear frame strength handles 50,000 psi and enjoy best-in-class optional 74-gallon combined fuel tanks.
